The John Keay book is incredibly fast-paced and dense, and starts at a much earlier time period than most Westerners will be interested in to begin with. The best single book I read on India was definitely Guha's 'India After Gandhi', which might be my favourite history book of all time. It really consumed my life for a few days in January last year
